Explosion Relief Venting
Venting of industrial dust explosions has been practiced for
many decades and provides an economical protection solution for facilities where dust explosions can occur. When specifying explosion vents, the impact and associated risks of the ejected fireball (both pressure and flame) in the vicinity of the installed vent needs to be considered. Explosion relief must therefore be directed to a safe area. If explosion venting is a suitable option for an application then explosion isolation must also be considered in order to reduce the risk of flame propagation along ducting to connected process plant.

IEP Technologies explosion vent panels are designed to open at a predetermined pressure, to allow the fireball and explosive pressure to vent to a safe area. Vent panels are available in a full range of sizes, configurations and opening pressures. Depending on the specific application, explosion vent panels are available in flat, multi-layer and domed formats to provide the right protection solution. Suitable for a very wide range of explosion parameters ranging from very high KSt values down to very low pred levels, engineered and selected correctly explosion venting can serve as the simplest protection method. Whether the best venting option for a specific application is a standard or a flameless vent; explosion isolation must also be considered in order to reduce the risk of flame propagation to interconnected process vessels or the plant itself.
Standard & Flameless Venting Solutions
IEP Technologies provides the appropriate explosion vent for the application with a wide range of vents available. The venting protection options available include standard vents for applications where the fireball and associated pressure can be released into a safe area and flameless venting are possible solutions for those applications where flame ejection cannot be tolerated. Standard and Flameless Venting solutions are detailed below.
Filter installations with pneumatic cleaning systems and high vacuum operations require an explosion vent that can withstand vacuum and positive pressure cycling for a long periods of time. For such requirements the GE style vent is the best choice. Its domed design enables negative pressure resistance without the need for an extra vacuum support. Standard GE features include pressure spike tolerance and integrated flange gaskets.
If the negative pressure is not greater than 60% of the rated opening pressure, installation of a domed vent has no extra benefit. For this application the KE style vent is an alternative to the domed GE. The KE provides long durability and aerodynamic advantages compared to the domed type, for example in cyclones. Pressure spike tolerance, integrated flange gaskets, cross rib and folded edges are standard KE design features.
The KER style vent is perfect for standard applications in powder handling and storage. The KER is suitable for plant equipment with static over/under pressure conditions up to 50% of the rated rupture pressure. A unique feature with the KER is that edge reinforcement in its design allows the KER to be mounted without an outlet flange thus reducing installation costs. Cross rib and folded edges are other standard KER design features.
The EVN range of flameless vents are designed to quench the ejected flamefront and relieve the pressure from a dust explosion. Offered in a range of styles each with an integrated flame arrester designed to provide flameless pressure relief. The revolutionary EVN range of flameless vents have a low-mass valve plate and low opening pressure. This flameless vent reacts within fractions of a second in the event of an explosion. Following an explosion, the valve plate closes and seals again, lowering the risk of post-explosion fires.
